May this Diwali open our hearts and minds towards fellow beings, there is a real joy and freedom in it. Lighting the lamps and candles symbolically represent turning the switch of the the mind on to remove darkness and lighten up the mind to see a lot more, and to open oneself up to possibilities and embrace a whole lot more than visible. All Festivals, regardless of the religion they are affiliated with have an universal message – of oneness of humankind. Let’s celebrate to that. I hope to attend many Diwali events in town, including Dinners.
You can always wish ” Happy Diwali” “Diwali Mubarak” “Diwali ki Shubh Kamnayien”
“Festivals of the World” is an educational series started by Mike Ghouse in 1993 and continues with the Center for Pluralism. When we live as neighbors, we might as well learn about each other. The best way to build cohesive societies is for its members to understand each other’s sorrows and joys, and festivities and commemorations. Most of these writings were done under my name, but now it will be all under Center for Pluralism. To learn about any major festival of any religion, please type in the name of festival with my name.
Example: Rosh Hashanah Mike Ghouse or Diwali Mike Ghouse
Diwali is the Indian festival of lights and is celebrated throughout India and the Indian Diaspora. It is also celebrated in Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Malaysia, Singapore, Guyana, West Indies, Fiji, and of course, UK, Canada, South Africa, Australia and here in the United States.
Diwali is spelled differently, and is called by many names. There is Divali among others, and Deepavali, meaning the festival of lights. Although Diwali is a Hindu tradition, many a people of different faiths participate in celebrations – Jains, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Zoroastrians and others of India and Indian origin.
People decorate their homes with lights and Rangoli, i.e., colorful drawing in the front yard of the home, sidewalks, even roads in India with colorful powders or colorful pieces of chalk. Women and Children look forward to expressing their artistic talent in this season. Their surroundings filled with colorful lights to enliven the day, to mark the dawn of a new era in one’s life.

A message to my fellow Indians on this occassion
A tiny minority of people calling themselves Hindus are creating havoc in the nation, harassing, lynching and killing fellow Indians for what they write, eat, drink, wear or believe. I do not expect the Government of India to ensure rule of law. But we cannot abdicate the responsibility of keeping our nations pluralistic heritage intact. I appeal to the silent majority of Hindus to represent Hinduism and not the misguided ones represent it.
“A log Ram ka naam badnaam kar rahe hain” these people are tarnishing the name of Lord Ram. Let Hinduism continue to be respectful of God’s creation, as we are all one large family – aka Vasudhaiva Kutumbukum. Let people have the freedom to live their lives happily.
- May this Diwali purge your heart, mind and soul from hate, malice, anger and ill-will;
- May this Diwali open your hearts and minds towards fellow being;
- May this Diwali brighten your life, and may this Diwali mark the dawn of a new era;
दोनों में खुशी ही खुशी है
donon may khushi hi khushi hai –
रमज़ान एक नया इंसान बनाता है
Ramzan ek naya insaan banata hai –
रमज़ान में हर बात का रिव्यू होता है
Ramzan may her baat ka review hota hai –
रमज़ान पिछले साल का स्लेट क्लीन करता है
Ramzan pichlay saal ki slate clean karta hai –
दिवाली और रमज़ान से सबका अच्छा ही होता है
Diwali aur Ramzan say subka acha hi hota hai
The more we learn about each other, the fewer the misunderstandings would be.
